President Jerry Steward is a lifelong Oklahoma resident. His passion for education began early in life—he credits education as his key to escaping poverty, broadening his worldview, and expanding his career opportunities.
He received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Central Oklahoma, and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Oklahoma. Dr. Steward is a former member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives where he was Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.
President Steward began his professional career as a public school teacher. After graduating from law school, he established his own law firm and was senior partner in Steward Law Firm for over twenty years. He is licensed to practice law by the Oklahoma Supreme Court, the U.S. District Court for both the Western and Eastern District of Oklahoma, the U.S. Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.
During the college’s early years, President Steward actively supported the growth of OCCC, eventually becoming a Regent for the college and would later serve in key administrative roles such as General Counsel, Vice President for Community Development, and Executive Vice President. He was also a Professor of Political Science. In the course of his career at OCCC, President Steward provided leadership in securing over $48 million for Oklahoma City Community College.
As part of his ongoing community outreach efforts, President Steward currently serves on the Board of Commissioners of the Oklahoma City Housing Authority, is a member of the Board of Directors of Integris Southwest Medical Center, the Oklahoma State Chamber of Commerce, Allied Arts, and the Moore Chamber of Commerce. Throughout his professional career, he has held many other positions of leadership in the community. He is also a member of Leadership Oklahoma, Class XX.
President Steward is a passionate advocate for workforce development, student diversity, and community engagement.
He became the tenth president of Oklahoma City Community College on July 2, 2015. President Steward and his wife, Tammy Steward, have five children and three grandchildren. He enjoys reading, traveling, and activities with his family.
